Small Group Classes

Small Group Classes are usually 2 to 7 participants, and are scheduled similarly to private chess lessons. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars to rent a space, these can be done at a library, quiet lobby of a building, or in the comfort of your own home.

As opposed to a private chess lesson, small group lessons give students the chance to play and interact with eachother, all while receiving consistent feedback from an experienced coach.

This is also often a much more cost-effective option when compared to private chess lessons! Some coaches, when teaching 4 students instead of 1, will charge even 25% as much as their normal rate, per student!

When compared to a chess club held at school, these small group classes are much smaller, allowing for a better coach-to-student ratio. It also allows for a tight-knit group of friends, or family members, to meet with eachother, as opposed to a classroom of acquaintances or classmates that your child might not interact with during the school day. The students are also not restricted by age or school enrollment.

How might small group classes work?

A group of parents planning on enrolling their kids in the small group class will get together and decide on the meeting times, places, and dates ahead of time. Once this is decided, all that needs to be done is contact a coach for their rates. Then the coach just needs to show up and teach each class. The coach can provide all material required for the class, or the group can decide to keep the chess boards for free play after the coach leaves.

This class format has a lot more flexibility in terms of times, dates, and locations compared to a school club, although it may be more difficult to coordinate schedules compared to just holding a pivate chess lesson. Nonetheless, it’s a great way to save on cost, and learning for the kids can be much more fun in a group with their close friends!
